The good news first: fake Carhartt is still rare compared to the mountain of genuine pieces out there — this stuff was made by the millions for working people. But as vintage prices climb, fakes are climbing with them, especially for the most hyped jackets. Here's what we check before any piece enters the shop, so you know what to look for anywhere else.
THE FOUR KINDS OF FAKES

1. Logo swaps — the most common by far, because they're the easiest to make. A jacket from another brand (or no brand) gets its labels stripped and Carhartt patches sewn on. The giveaway is construction that doesn't match any real Carhartt style — like a "Detroit" with the chest pocket on the right side, when genuine Detroits have always had it on the left.
2. Full replicas — factory-made copies of specific sought-after styles, most often the J97 Detroit Jacket. These are the dangerous ones: convincing at first glance, wrong in the details. The lining is usually the tell — replicas use a flannel that no J97 ever shipped with. Here's a replica J97 next to the genuine jacket — study the lining:

3. "Reworked" pieces — jackets stitched together from parts of other garments, usually multi-colored and multi-fabric. Even when real Carhartt panels are involved, you can't verify what the rest is. We treat them as fakes.
4. Fake "rare" pieces — a real jacket with counterfeit custom embroidery added to imitate genuinely rare versions, or a real-but-misrepresented piece: kids'/women's cuts with tags removed, re-dyed colors sold as rare colorways, or recent production sold as "vintage" because it's faded.
THE TAG NEVER LIES — IF YOU READ IT
Most fakes die at the care tag. Look for:
Spelling and formatting errors. Real Carhartt tags don't say "Mdium" or "Mexieo" — replica tags are famous for both, plus mismatched translations where the French or Spanish size doesn't agree with the English one. Sellers sometimes cut the tag out to hide this; a missing tag on a supposedly premium piece is itself a flag.
A style code that doesn't match the garment. The code at the bottom of the tag tells you exactly what the piece is. A known scam is sewing the tag from the FRS003 flame-resistant work shirt into a chore coat — one search of the style code exposes it. This is why we list every item by its real code.

And the registration number: genuine Carhartt has carried RN# 14806 since the late 1950s (you can see it on our own pieces in the tag-dating guide). Fakes often omit it or print a different number.
One known fake to memorize: a tag reading "196 158 5314B" paired with a blue "Union Made in U.S.A. ACTWU" label — this exact combination appears on huge numbers of fakes from overseas marketplaces, on jackets, sweatshirts, whatever. The same numbers on every garment is the tell; real date codes vary piece to piece.

CHECK THE PATCH

The woven "C" patch on genuine workwear is square with tidy, consistent edges — like the ones on our own pieces in the shop. One caution from the collector community that we agree with: genuine Carhartt sometimes has crooked stitching too. Never call fake on one flaw — fakes carry a cluster of them.
TWO REAL JACKETS OFTEN CALLED FAKE
Worth knowing in reverse: the J124 (flannel-lined nylon Detroit) and J138 (flannel-lined Active) are genuine Carhartt styles whose linings resemble what replicas use — so they get wrongly accused constantly. Read the style code before judging the lining.

1. Read the style code and search it — does it match the garment? 2. Check spelling and translations on the care tag. 3. Confirm RN# 14806. 4. Square patch, left chest pocket (Detroits), sane construction. 5. Beware the "196 158 5314B / ACTWU" tag combo. 6. One flaw = look closer. A cluster of flaws = walk away.
